Leeds League Premiership:
York Vikings 74
- Yorkshire Wizards 69

The premiership team kicked of their 2024-2025 season, welcoming a number of new players for the first game. Pat Mackle, returning from Manchester, David Joseph, Oliver Barlow, Miguel Artega and Michael Stunt all made their debut for the start of the new season.

Pat Mackle made his presence known straight away, being the first player to score in the game. Continuing with prolific scoring in the first quarter, Pat went for 18 points (including 2 three pointers), making it already the most impressive debut of any Vikings/Eagles player. Adam Wright was the only other Viking player to score in the first quarter. Despite the concentration of scoring this was the result of an intensive defensive effort leading to steals and a excellent execution on the offensive end. The first quarter finished 24 - 15 for Vikings.

Yorkshire Wizards started the second quarter strong, going on a 5 - 0 run to close the gap, before Andy Capes got on the scoresheet as well, after being fouled on a drive. The game continued in a back and forth fashion, but in the end Vikings managed to just win the quarter 20 - 18, and went into half time with an 11 point lead.

The Leeds team tried once again to close the gap, by intensifying their defence and implementing a half court pressure defence. This caused a number of turnovers and rushed offenses by the Vikings, allowing the Wizards to go on a 11 - 4 run and close the gap to 4 points. A time out by Vikings and an adjustment in the line ups led to the home team regaining their composure, spacing the floor well on offense to avoid the traps. At the same time with the help of all the new additions the defensive energy stayed strong throughout, allowing Vikings to go on a 10 - 2 run from the 7th minute onwards to close out the quarter, winning it by 1.

With the York team having a 12 point lead to start the final quarter, the Wizards of Yorkshire dug deep and came out pressing and trapping the Vikings of York once again causing turnover after turnover. Additionally starters Andy Capes, Pat Mackle and David Joseph got into foul trouble. The away team capitalising on all of this went on a 11 - 0 run in the first 3 minutes of the fourth quarter, making it a 1 point game and forcing a quick time out by the Vikings. The adjustments worked and Vikings got back into the game going on a 6 - 0 run over the next two minutes, to rebuild the lead. Wizards responded with a big three to stay in. Oliver Barlow with his first basket for Vikings, Andy Capes and David Avery scored to make the game 71 - 62 with 1 minute to go. However, Vikings top scorer Pat Mackle fouled out and the Wizards still had some magic left. R. Jean-Guy from the Wizards hit impressive back-to-back threes. Vikings fouled with 18 seconds left, sending G. Ejakita to the foul line, who made the second of the free throws to make the game 71 - 69. Vikings called a time-out to advance the ball. Wizards tried to foul to stop the clock, but had two fouls to give, which meant Vikings could run the clock down a bit more. David Avery was finally send to the foul line, making both his free throws, to make it a 4 point lead. Wizards then turned it over and with a desperation attempt to win the ball back, Wizards committed an unsportsmanlike foul, with only a couple of seconds left. Andy Capes sealed the win hitting 1 out of 2 free throws, to make the final score 74 - 69.

Notes: Pat Mackle 29 points is the highest scoring Viking debut. All the new additions managed to help create a strong defensive identity and a never give up attitude for the team. The 3 three pointers made, are the lowest amount of three pointers that the prem team has scored in a win since they last won against Yorkshire Wizards in October 2023.
