York Vikings Basketball Club
Leeds League Premiership:
York Vikings 47
- Deighton Ryders 71
14 November 2024
The York Vikings Prem team, faced once again the Deighton Ryders, this time at home. Without their top scorer Pat Mackle, who had potential sustained a season ending injury in the previous game against Ryders and a few other players out with injury or unavailable, a number of D2 team players stepped up.
The Vikings started the game great, behind two big threes by Andy Capes, going ahead 8 - 0 after 2 minutes. However, the experience of the Ryders showed, who started to close on defence the passing lanes and patiently attacked the Vikings basket. After the quick start the Ryders managed to hold the Vikings to 2 points, while scoring 14 points to close out the quarter.
With the momentum clearly with Deighton, the visiting team continued to carry the momentum into the 2nd quarter and further build their lead in the first 8 minutes with a 12 - 5 run. Deighton, also started to get a number of fouls called and kept going to the line. Vikings managed to recover for the last two minutes going 6 - 3 to make it a respectable quarter.
With the Ryders having an 8 point lead heading into the 2nd half, Vikings pushed to close the gap and managed behind a three by Sam Thornhill and 2 by Andy Capes to get no closer than 6 points after 6 minutes. Once again a couple of costly turnovers and miscommunication on defence let the Ryders to go on another run (11 - 2) in the last 4 minutes of the quarter and to take a commanding lead heading into the 4th quarter.
Ryders bolstered by that run continued to attack the basket and close down the lanes to the basket on the defensive end, not allowing for Vikings to get back into the game in the last quarter. Despite some strong effort by the home team, Ryders managed to increase their lead and claim the win.
Game MVP: Andy Capes
