York Vikings Basketball Club
Leeds League Division 2:
York Vikings (2) 64
- Spen Valley Vipers Black 52
9 January 2025

With the Prem team closing out the year 2024 with a win, it was down to the D2 team to try to start 2025 with a W for the Vikings.
The York team was hosting Spen Valley Vipers Black in one of the coldest days in decades. The game started out being an even affair for most of the first quarter. With both teams showing signs of rust, after the holidays. As such the teams were exchanging baskets as much as turnovers. Until the 9th minutes it was an even game at 14 a piece. However, in the last minute both Stefan Marz and Nelvin Lau (both playing for the first time for the second team this season) hit back to back threes to close out the quarter. First quarter 20 - 14 for Vikings.
The second quarter was very much like the first quarter without the finish of the first. Vipers managed to go win the quarter 11 - 8 to make the half time score 28 - 25 for Vikings.
The second half was different though and the home team improved their defence and seemed to be the first team to dust of the rust accumulated over the holidays. The team put an exceptional quarter together on both ends winning the quarter 16 - 9 and ending the third quarter with a 10 point lead.
Due to the big lead Spen Valley Vipers Black upped their game trying to get back in, but Vikings showed resilience, especially with Nelvin Lau going off with 13 points in the quarter, making every shot attempted. Vikings won the quarter 20 - 18 and Vikings start 2025 with a win.
Notes: Nelvin Lau had a career high with the Vikings of 18 points. He was supported by Sam Thornhill, who had turned 18 just days before, scoring 12 points.
Game MVP: Nelvin Lau
