The 2024-2025 season started for the York Vikings hosting the Halifax Cobras, for the Leeds Division 2 league. Having restructured the teams and with a number of new players joining throughout the off-season, this years team looked quite different from previous years. Anthony Holdsworth, Darren Taylor, Matt Theakstone and Mohcen Cheref returned from last years team. They were joined by Jamie Boynton and David Avery who played in last years first team. Lloyd Bickerstaffe returned after not playing the 2023-2024 season. Jonathan Wetherley and Sam Thornhill made strong debuts as York Vikings.


The game could not have started better for the Vikings, who immediately played an intense man-to-man defence forcing turnover after turnover which led to easy baskets. This alongside some great play making and ball movement, led to a 20 - 0 score. Halifax managed to finally score a basket in the 8th minute. Sam Thornhill had his first basket for Vikings with a buzzer beater 3 at the end of the quarter. The quarter finished 25 - 6 for Vikings.

Cobras managed to get on the scoresheet at the end of the quarter and managed to stop the fast break onslaught by the Vikings. This continued for the first 5 minutes of the second quarter. With the game slowed down and a high number of turnovers, the 2nd quarter first half had only a 5-3 score for the home team. Jonathan Wetherley with his first Vikings basket then started of the 2nd quarters resurgence for the Vikings, with the York team ending up winning the quarter 20 - 12, for a half time score of 45 - 18.


In the second half the Cobras switched to a 3-2 zone and Vikings were unable to adjust leading to turnover after turnover. Halifax's Stansfield went on a 5 minute personal 5 - 0 run for the Cobras. Jamie Boynton was the man this time to break the Vikings scoring slump, and the York team managed to finish this low scoring quarter with a draw of 8 - 8.

In the last quarter the York team showed their defensive intent again, leading to strong quarter, closing Halifax out with a 22 - 5 run and a final score of 75 - 31.


Notes: Jamie Boynton with his strong defence and game leading 17 points was the Player of the Game. This was also his career high with York Vikings. David Avery became the first player this season and 6th overall to reach 50 career games with York Vikings.
