York Vikings Basketball Club
LBL Division 1:
York Vikings (1) 67
- Leeds Demons (2) 64
22 January 2026

Vikings firsts hosted Demons seconds, who were 2nd in the league.
Vikings started out the game as a zone, hustling out to the corners to make it difficult for the Demons shooters, while also managing to crowd the middle. This active zone limited the Demons to 8 points, while offensively the team managed to get some quick baskets helping Vikings score 19 in the quarter.
The Demons managed to slowly adjust to the Vikings defence and managed to match Vikings for the first 5 minutes of the second quarter, before going on a 7 - 0 run to close the gap. Things evened out again, but Demons managed to close the gap a bit more by winning the quarter 24 - 16. Half time score 35 - 32 for the home team. At this point Nick Hutchinson who had scored 10 points already and was a key cog, especially on offense, had to leave the game due to an ankle injury.
With the start of the second half Demons continued to play a strong game with Vikings just managing to hang in there. In the 5th minute of the 3rd quarter Demons managed to take the lead with a big 3. The York team called a time out. Following the time out a switch to man defence energized the team and managed to slow the Leeds teams momentum. Demons won that quarter 18 - 14 and now had a 1 point lead starting the 4th quarter.
Both teams entered the final quarter knowing they had a chance to win. Both teams defences were not giving an inch and for the first 4 minutes each team only score 2 points. Then Jonny Copley took matters into his own hands, answering any basket made by the Demons and hitting 3 threes, scoring 11 (including the final 6) of the final 15 points scored by the Vikings. Demons had 2 x 3 point attempts to tie the game, but missed as Vikings kept closing out and making it difficult shots.
Game MVP: Jonny Copley
