York Vikings Basketball Club
HBA Championship:
York Vikings 80
- Hull Supremos 67
20 November 2024
York Vikings travelled to Hull for their second league game in the HBA Championship. Looking for their first win, the team had a number of absences, but where bolstered by Jonny Copley joining the squad.
Both teams started the game out strongly, playing good defence and responding to every basket scored with a basket of their own. The first quarter as a result ended evenly, with both teams scoring 15 points a piece.
In the second half, however the Viking bigs (Dan Day and Tom Marks) dominated the middle and Jonny Copley just took it to the basket over and over again scoring 10 out of the 21 points the Vikings made in the quarter. Supremos could not break the Vikings defence and as a result only scored 13.
The second half was a continuation of the second quarter. The defence in the middle made it difficult for the Supremos and the York team kept hustling on the perimeter to force turnovers and get out on the fast break. The third quarter ended 24 - 18. The overall score being 60 - 46.
Supremos switched to a full court press, throwing the Vikings off for a few minutes. However the Vikings soon managed to handle the press and it opened up the game to a quick paced affair in the last quarter, with both teams continiously on a fast break. The Supremos of Hull managed to win the last quarter 21-20, but Vikings took the game.
Game MVP: Jonny Copley
Notes: Jonny Copley with 24 points, was 1 point shy to match his career high with the Vikings. Vali Moldovan (with 14 points), Stephen Rowley and Hussein Kahil all had career high points with the Vikings. Dan Day, for the first time with the Vikings, had double figures in 2 consecutive games.
